My First Documentary

For my big project in my multimedia practicum class, I plan on creating a short, five-minute documentary about a local shelter called Abandoned Pet Rescue. The documentary will explore how this specific shelter stands out from others in the state, as well as its impact on the South Florida community. I will be interviewing staff members and volunteers who help run the shelter day-to-day. B-roll of the animals, along with visuals inspired by the shelter’s color scheme, will be incorporated into the video through graphics such as lower thirds and titles.

My main goal is to have the documentary posted on their YouTube channel, social media, and website so South Florida locals can become more informed about ethical adoption and potentially support the shelter through donations or volunteering. To begin, this shelter is especially meaningful to me because of my sister’s strong connection to it. She volunteers there regularly and has shown me firsthand the dedication and compassion that goes into caring for these animals. Through her involvement, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how important it is to support nonprofit organizations that rely heavily on community help rather than government funding. One of the main reasons I want to highlight this shelter is because it is a no-kill shelter. This means that even when they reach capacity, they do not resort to euthanization to make space for more animals. In many areas, shelters are forced to make difficult decisions, especially for older or long-term animals. Abandoned Pet Rescue’s commitment to giving every animal a chance is incredibly impactful, but it also requires significant support from the community.

Another reason I chose this shelter is because it promotes the message “adopt, don’t shop.” This encourages people to adopt animals from shelters instead of purchasing them from breeders. In some cases, breeders may prioritize profit over the well-being of the animals, leading to unethical conditions. At the same time, thousands of animals in shelters are waiting for homes, and this message helps bring attention to that reality.Secondly, the formatting of the documentary will include a balance of B-roll, interviews, and possible voiceover or still images where appropriate. To keep the audience engaged, I plan to maintain a steady pace while incorporating clean, visually appealing graphics that match the shelter’s color scheme. These graphics will include names, roles, and possibly key questions or themes discussed during the interviews.Lastly, my goal with this documentary is to spread awareness about both the shelter and the importance of volunteering for nonprofit organizations. Encouraging donations and increased community involvement would be an incredible outcome. I will make sure my interview questions highlight these key ideas so that viewers can better understand how they can make a difference.

In conclusion, my documentary will spotlight a local South Florida animal shelter, Abandoned Pet Rescue. Through interviews with staff and volunteers, the film will explore topics such as the importance of volunteering, personal experiences at the shelter, and why community support matters. With engaging and thoughtful visuals, I aim to capture the attention of a local audience and inspire action. Ultimately, my goal is to raise awareness about supporting nonprofit organizations with meaningful missions and help this shelter gain the recognition and support it deserves.
